Profile

The Center for Entrepreneurial and Innovative Management (CEIM) is an interdisciplinary research and transfer center established at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management in 2014.

It has two main goals:

  • to foster the creation of successful new companies and spin-offs
  • to support established companies to innovate their business model

CEIM consists of two parts: the Co-Creation Lab and the Innovation Lab.
The Co-Creation Lab is the one-stop agency for founders and fosters the creation of interdisciplinary founder teams. It supports potential founders in further developing their ideas into a business concept. The founders can then afterwards apply for the “SpinLab - The HHL Accelerator” to develop their business concept into successful startups.
The Innovation Lab offers established companies the possibility to develop new business models with the support of students. This enables the companies to get new insights and to get ideas out of the box of the company borders. After indentifying promising business concepts, students can further develop them in the “SpinLab - The HHL Accelerator”. The companies can decide afterwards to integrate them into their business or further develop them in a form of subsidiary.

Further, CEIM organizes the yearly HHL International Investorsday together with “SpinLab – The HHL Accelerator” which brings together founders, investors and incumbents.

Research

CEIM compiles the research in the topics of business model innovation and spin-offs. In addition, CEIM will collect data within different topics of the Co-Creation lab, the innovation lab and the accelerator to be able to conduct longitudinal studies in these topics.

Business Model Innovation:
Due to the fast change in technology and society companies need to further develop and adapt their business models to the need in the environment. A sole focus on product innovation is not sufficient anymore. However, it’s often a challenge to find these new business models because the companies are focused on their current business model. CEIM offer a new innovative concept, to use students to assist in the development of new business models. CEIM will analyze the open business model innovation process from a research perspective to evaluate the success of this approach. Further, success factors of outsourcing the business model innovation will be derived. There is a great research potential because this is a new topic in literature.

Spin-Offs:
CEIM fosters the creation of spin-offs out of universities and universities of applied science. A new approach is to bring together students from HHL and partner institutions like the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam. In this way, business students will work together with students which have a practical background. CEIM will evaluate the degree of cooperation and the possibilities of success of such collaborations. Traditionally, spin-offs have a strong emphasis on technical employees. Possible, the matching with strong business students will be a relevant success factor.

SpinLab

“SpinLab – The HHL Accelerator” is an integrated part of the overall CEIM concept of HHL. Located on the creative and inspiring area of the Spinnerei Leipzig (Leipzig's cotton mill) it will be established at the beginning of 2015. It is financed by investors and its use for established companies.

Besides access to required infrastructure (co-working offices) founding and innovation teams benefit from intensive coaching and consulting as well as mentoring, from HHL’s excellent networks of investors and entrepreneurs, from supporting service providers and from the opportunities to exchange experiences internationally.

The unique idea of “SpinLab – The HHL Accelerator” is that this platform can not only be used by startups but also by established companies. The focus is on innovative, internationally scalable business ideas. The program is limited to a maximum of 6 months at no charge and with no equity holding. Moreover, there is the opportunity of using additional other office spaces on Leipzig’s cotton mill to foster the further growth of the company.
