Core Modules

Elective Modules

German Language Courses

If you are interested in German companies after graduation, it is never too early to start learning German. As statistic shows, employers in Germany very often require good language skills from MBA graduates and even if you are not planning to stay in Germany after graduation, why not use the time spent in Leipzig to practice a new language.

At HHL, you will have the opportunity to choose from several courses at all levels running throughout the program for no additional fees. For those who want to use the lecture-free time to learn German, there is an intensive beginner course offered in August. You will find the detailed information about our language courses in the downloads at the end of this section.

For registration please use: theresa.kodritsch(at)

Student Consulting Projects

Within the module “Student Consulting Projects” you have the chance to take on the role of a company consultant and apply the concepts you have learned to actual business practice. By working on a field (consulting) project, you will gain insights into high-performing companies and help them solve critical business issues. HHL offers you a variety of challenging projects, with multinational companies as well as start-ups and local companies, e. g.

Professional Internship

Starting with your 5th term, you can choose to do an internship which usually lasts 3 to 6 months at a company of your choice as part of the study program (only available for the Advanced Track). Organizations in which HHL students have completed internships include companies such as Allianz, Bayer, Continental, Deutsche Telekom, Hugo Boss, KPMG, Lufthansa, Procter & Gamble, Puma, Robert Bosch, Volkswagen and many more.

The internships offered are on a full-time basis and are usually paid, and sometimes these also turn into job opportunities at the end of the training; the international students are entitled to conduct the internship with a student visa. Around 60% of our students have successfully conducted an internship as an important step towards a fulfilling career in the German or international job market after their MBA.

The MBA Faculty – World-class Business and Teaching Experience

HHL’s MBA faculty is a carefully selected combination of full-time resident professors and international guest professors from top universities who bring a wealth of international experience to the classroom. They have taught at MIT, Stanford, the University of Chicago, the University of St. Gallen and other prestigious universities. They are at the forefront in their respective fields and enhance our reputation as a leading business school. In order to bring together the academic element with the state-of-the-art business experience, several courses are taught by business professionals with an outstanding track record of expertise in their subjects.

“HHL is an institution that shares some of my core values as a scholar. It builds the connection between academic scholarship, theoretical development, and real world practice. That is one of the hallmarks of a business school.”
Prof. Michael E. Porter, PhD
Honorary Doctor of HHL Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, Harvard Business School, USA

“Our full-time MBA Program offers an innovative and flexible program structure which covers all functional areas of modern business. This ensures a learning environment that combines state-of-the-art courses with practical experience to prepare you best for your leadership challenges ahead.”
Professor Dr. Bernhard Schwetzler
Academic Director of the MBA Programs, Chair of Financial Management

“After working in mechanical engineering industry, I decided to have a change in my career, a transition into more of a managerial position. I took the GMAT with a score of 780, I started looking at the top colleges, especially those that would offer me good financial support. Considering Germany's strong economy, and HHL's excellent repute in the country, I decided to join this school. HHL is held at high esteem and the MBA program’s graduates are deemed high-caliber; thus, this qualification will act as an endorsement of my capabilities. In addition, the 15-month course period compared to two-years in many other prestigious institutions, along with affordable fees, makes this course financially attractive.”

Sayantan Chattopadhyay (India), MBA alumnus, Business Analysis Expert at IDT Biologika

“As a student at HHL, I am excited to take advantage of the flexible schedule the classes provide to pursue other career benefiting opportunities such as TEDxHHL and European Ivy League. Having time in our schedule set aside for internships also allows me to work during the MBA program and gain important skills that are pertinent to the degree.”

Braden Burchett (USA), MBA student

“HHL differentiates in the sense that it makes you a leader. Rather than being trained to be the best employee, we are trained each day to be the best employer. Motivation is not to be the employee of the month but rather to be the one who decides who shall be the employee of the month. Difference is subtle but astoundingly deep. HHL explores the leadership sides of you and it is complete because you are not coached to spill out jargons like ‘Achieve’, ‘Impress’, or ‘Leverage’ but rather how to make informed decisions in Finance, Strategy, Marketing etc. ”

Aneesh Bhardwaj (India), MBA student

“The constant spirit of entrepreneurship is what makes the program at HHL special to me. It’s encouraging to exchange your ideas with your peers from a whole spectrum of professional background and to get brilliant feedback. I also appreciate a lot the practical side of the MBA program by applying the theory to real business cases and presenting its utility. This is what makes the program unique to me.”

Frederick Bohn (Germany), MBA student

“The MBA at HHL was the perfect next step for both my career and personal life. On one side, the diversity of my MBA classmates provided a high valuable and a unique lifelong multi-cultural experience, and the interaction with all those brilliant minds around the globe was probably one of the most interesting experiences of my studies. On the other side, Leipzig was the perfect city to study, network and at the same time easily integrate into the German society.”

Outside the box – gain more international experience at our top partner universities

International competence is essential for a business leader. Global partnerships are therefore one of HHL’s key assets. We serve our selective number of students with over 130 partner universities around the globe.

In order to keep abreast of current international, social, and economic challenges, an optional term abroad is offered in the 5th or 6th term in the MBA curriculum.

Additional Degree Options

We also offer an additional degree option with selected partner universities. Within this option you have the opportunity to earn an additional degree at one of these institutions.

Opting for an additonal degree will cause an extension of the standard period of study as well as additional costs.
The places are limited and will be allocated within the regular nomination process of all outgoing students by using the student ranking.
The master thesis must be written at the home university. The final transcripts will be handed out to you by the home university after completing both programs.

Please note that as an HHL student you have enough time to decide on your study abroad destination or your additional degree option as the placement will be done at the end of your first term at HHL.

MBA students who would like to earn a second degree have to choose the semester abroad as an elective and then continue their studies as long as necessary to earn the additional degree abroad.

If you are interested in an additional degree you have to meet the following requirements:

  • GMAT score of at least 600
  • Meet the qualifications set by the partner university regarding minimum age and/or work experience and language skills.

HHL Success Stories

“After seeing Bertelsmann’s on-campus presentation at HHL and learning how interested they are in international profiles, I approached the company representative at the get-together afterwards to learn about internship opportunities in HR. One thing lead to another, and I ended up landing an internship in Talent Management at Bertelsmann’s corporate headquarters. This internship turned into a job offer, and now I am an Associate in Corporate Management Development, focusing on university relations and employer branding. My first day of work was actually coming to HHL to do a company presentation! Talk about full circle!”

Pamela Taylor (USA)
MBA alumna, Director Employer Branding & Talent Acquisition, Bertelsmann, Germany

“Looking back at my decision to choose HHL for postgraduate studies: if I was suppose to choose again I would repeat that decision. For a person who wants to do an MBA course in Germany, on a prestige international business school, in the highly diversified class and in a thriving but charming city such as Leipzig, HHL is the perfect choice. After finishing studies I've successfully shifted my career to the business consulting field, where I am still active.”

Pedja Popic (Serbia)
MBA alumnus, Business consulting professional adviser to the SB of Kerseyco ltd

“Having worked in commercial real estate in the US for most of my career, I was looking for options to move into a new field while continuing to live in Europe. Through connections that were established due to HHL’s strong Entrepreneurship program, and the alumni network, I am now working at trivago GmbH, a leading international travel platform.”

Jonathan Eichelberger (USA)
MBA alumnus, Strategy and Business Development, Trivago GmbH, Germany

“The MBA helped me to enhance knowledge and skills in standard business disciplines in addition to experiencing fields that were completely new to me. I particularly enjoyed entrepreneurial disciplines, not only in theory but also by testing the practical worth of new ideas we developed. The combination of this high class academic program, the international experience and the practical knowledge I had before the studies are the foundation of my professional development.”

Denis Ranke (Germany)

MBA alumnus, Head of Financial Planning & Analysis, Marketplaces Germany, eBay GmbH, Germany

I have been accepted by 3 of the best business schools in Germany and I have chosen HHL due to its professors, due to its worldwide prestige in Entrepreneurship and Strategy and finally due to the city. The program was very well structured and allowed me to live a full international experience. Moreover, another reason why I chose HHL for my MBA studies was the possibility to do an internship, as for me doing an internship was of great importance. Firstly, it allowed me to interact with a company of my choice before taking a long term decision about joining them and second, it helped me build a strong bridge to a future career on the German job market.
I did my internship with Continental, in Hannover, in the Brand and Business Management Department of the EMEA tire business and it lasted for six months. After that, my manager gave me the possibility to continue for another three months and develop my master thesis project within her unit. One week after my thesis and my MBA were completed, I was starting my new position as a Corporate Real Estate Manager for Continental AG. The HHL MBA internship proved to deliver my desired outcome and the key ingredient was access to a vast network that HHL has built in Germany and abroad.

“Thanks to HHL’s Women in Business Scholarship, I had more flexibility with my studying and living budget. That took some weight off my shoulders and allowed me to focus on learning everything. Furthermore, this scholarship is a step towards equality between men and women. In today’s business world, there is still a significantly higher percentage of men than women in leading positions. Every bit of encouragement for women to take the next step in their careers and move up the management ladder is step in the right direction. This scholarship is both inspiration and peace of mind for women like myself to be just as ambitious and determined as the men learning alongside me in HHL's MBA program.”

I can’t upload all the documents by the deadline. Can I send them later?

Some of the documents have to be submitted along with your application. Please make sure you have uploaded them and indicate when we can expect the rest. Missing documents such as recommendation letters will be accepted within four weeks after your application. However, we encourage all candidates to submit their complete applications by the deadline, as late applications may not be considered. International candidates should complete their applications in a timely manner to allow enough time for visa processing.

Is GMAT mandatory?

The GMAT test is mandatory for the Full-time MBA applicants. Alternatively, HHL can accept the GRE test.
Our GMAT code is ZCB-P6-01. To register for the test, please visit the official GMAT website.

How do I submit my recommendation letters?

Please ask your referees to submit their recommendation letters to us directly. They can use the HHL template or write a recommendation in a free format. They can either email it to us (in this case, it should be scanned with the original signature and sent from the email account of the referee) or send it by mail to the following address:

HHL Admissions
Jahnallee 59
04109, Leipzig

In some cases, your referees may give their reference letters to you. Should this be the case, you may upload the letters to the online platform with the rest of your application. Please make sure that letters bear the original signature and contact information of the referees. In other cases please leave these fields in your application blank.

How many years of work experience do I need?

On average, students in our full-time MBA program have five years of work experience, ranging between three and twelve years. However, the minimum work experience cannot be shorter than two years full-time. Please note that only postgraduate work experience can be considered. Exception from this rule is military service that can be accepted regardless of the time during which it was completed (please see additional information about military/social service in the next question).

Internships completed after bachelor studies graduation will be accepted as relevant work experience.

Part-time work/internships will be counted as half of their total duration (for example, part-time internship from January 1 to December 31 will be counted as six months of work experience)

Any other practical experience after graduation from a bachelor level academic program might be considered by the MBA admissions team and we encourage candidates to include all information relevant to work experience in their application.

When can military service/social service be accepted as relevant work experience?

Military service can be accepted as work experience regardless of its duration and time of completion. If you have a certificate of completion of military service, please upload it in the respective field.

Social service can only be accepted as work experience if it was completed after university graduation, lasted at least 6 months and if you can provide a relevant certificate of completion. Please note: only official projects supported by relevant certificates can be recognized.

What is meant by „Proof of work experience“?

To determine your eligibility for the program, HHL requires that candidates submit a letter from their current/former employer(s) stating the length of their employment.
If your recommendation letter/s are provided by one of your employers with the length of your employment stated in the reference and the stated length exceeds the minimum work experience requirement, the recommendation letter will suffice and you can leave the field „Proof of work experience“ blank.

Do I have to send a hard copy of my application to HHL or will the electronic application be sufficient?

Your electronic application is sufficient to apply for the MBA program. Please note, however, that we require certified copies of your university degree certificates and grade transcripts. In case you upload uncertified copies of these documents online, they will be accepted and your application will be considered for admission, but you will ne requested to bring certified copies with you to HHL when you start your studies.

When should I apply for a scholarship and what other financial options are there?

Applicants will be considered for financial assistance upon a formal application only. You have to apply for one of the scholarships that we are offering at the same time when you submit your program application, by uploading the scholarship questionnaire among the other application documents. Please keep in mind that there is no other deadline to apply for scholarships, therefore your chances to be granted with a scholarship are higher if you apply early. What is the atmosphere at HHL and in Leipzig like?

HHL is the most popular business school in Germany located in one of the most dynamic and vibrant cities in whole Europe. Leipzig is home to 40,000 students and offers a high-quality lifestyle with very moderate living costs compared to other university cities. With its many parks around the campus, open air sports facilities, surrounding lakes with beautiful beaches, as well as many jogging and biking paths, Leipzig is probably the “greenest” metropole that you could find. Also our campus is surrounded by the green banks of the river Weiße Elster, where you can relax after a long day of group work. In your free time, you can also choose to have a drink with your classmates in one of the many cafés, bars and restaurants close to the campus or in the city center, or you can enjoy a cultural event. All in all, in Leipzig you will not get bored for a second.

Where will I be staying in Leipzig?

Leipzig offers plenty of reasonably priced housing options. Many HHL students choose to rent a private apartment or a shared flat during their stay in Leipzig. In general, the international students prefer to live in the student dorms which are located very close to the campus and to the student cafeteria. All student dorms in Leipzig are rented out by the Studentenwerk Leipzig (institution governed by public law for the support of college and university students; maintains cafeterias, dormitories, administers student loans etc.) and are available to HHL students as well.

What kind of networking opportunities will I have at HHL?

Networking is one of the key benefits of an MBA, hence at HHL we support you from the very beginning of your studies to develop your own lifelong professional network. Thanks to our close-knit alumni network, you will benefit from mentoring programs, company visits or alumni talks, which will all enable you to get insights about the career paths that will open for you once you have graduated from HHL. Moreover, company presentations and recruitment visits conducted by leading companies frequently take place on our campus, so you will have the chance to approach the company representatives on your own and ask for internship or job opportunities. In short, networking will be your daily routine during your MBA at HHL.

Will my classmates have different cultural, academic or professional backgrounds so that I can learn from the diversity of my class?

At HHL, we are convinced that diverse classrooms enrich the educational experience of all students. Therefore, in the MBA program you will meet classmates coming from all over the world, with diverse academic, professional or cultural backgrounds, but also one common goal, which is learning how to become the successful business leaders of tomorrow. Each year, our staff makes sure that the MBA class includes a critical mass of individuals, so that your ideas can be appropriately challenged. Thanks to an intercultural training taking place at the beginning of the program, you will have the chance to bond with your classmates and learn to cherish diversity as a global business imperative.

Are there any special requirements for applicants from China?

Applicants with university degree from People´s Republic of China are required to go through the APS certification process to prove the authenticity of both degree and grades obtained. APS stands for Academic Certification Authority (Akademische Prüfstelle) and is a service institution established jointly by German Embassy in Beijing and German Academic Exchange Institution (DAAD). Furthermore, APS certificate is an indispensable part of visa application documents for applicants who obtain their accreditation from a university of People´s Republic of China. APS process takes approximately 6-8 weeks, therefore it is recommendable to start APS certification process as early as possible so as to manage the whole application process more easily. Please kindly note that APS certificates are effective for an unlimited period.
