Does the full-time MBA Program only start in the fall?
Yes, you can join the full-time program in September of each year.
I can’t upload all the documents by the deadline. Can I send them later?
Some of the documents have to be submitted along with your application. Please make sure you have uploaded them and indicate when we can expect the rest. Missing documents such as recommendation letters will be accepted within four weeks after your application. However, we encourage all candidates to submit their complete applications by the deadline, as late applications may not be considered. International candidates should complete their applications in a timely manner to allow enough time for visa processing.
Is GMAT mandatory?
The GMAT test is mandatory for the Full-time MBA applicants. Alternatively, HHL can accept the GRE test.

How do I submit my recommendation letters?
Please ask your referees to submit their recommendation letters to us directly. They can use the HHL template or write a recommendation in a free format. They can either email it to us (in this case, it should be scanned with the original signature and sent from the email account of the referee) or send it by mail to the following address:
In some cases, your referees may give their reference letters to you. Should this be the case, you may upload the letters to the online platform with the rest of your application. Please make sure that letters bear the original signature and contact information of the referees. In other cases please leave these fields in your application blank.
How many years of work experience do I need?
On average, students in our full-time MBA program have five years of work experience, ranging between three and twelve years. However, the minimum work experience cannot be shorter than two years full-time. Please note that only postgraduate work experience can be considered. Exception from this rule is military service that can be accepted regardless of the time during which it was completed (please see additional information about military/social service in the next question).
Internships completed after bachelor studies graduation will be accepted as relevant work experience.
Part-time work/internships will be counted as half of their total duration (for example, part-time internship from January 1 to December 31 will be counted as six months of work experience)
Any other practical experience after graduation from a bachelor level academic program might be considered by the MBA admissions team and we encourage candidates to include all information relevant to work experience in their application.
When can military service/social service be accepted as relevant work experience?
Military service can be accepted as work experience regardless of its duration and time of completion. If you have a certificate of completion of military service, please upload it in the respective field.
Social service can only be accepted as work experience if it was completed after university graduation, lasted at least 6 months and if you can provide a relevant certificate of completion. Please note: only official projects supported by relevant certificates can be recognized.
What is meant by „Proof of work experience“?
To determine your eligibility for the program, HHL requires that candidates submit a letter from their current/former employer(s) stating the length of their employment.
If your recommendation letter/s are provided by one of your employers with the length of your employment stated in the reference and the stated length exceeds the minimum work experience requirement, the recommendation letter will suffice and you can leave the field „Proof of work experience“ blank.
Do I have to send a hard copy of my application to HHL or will the electronic application be sufficient?
Your electronic application is sufficient to apply for the MBA program. Please note, however, that we require certified copies of your university degree certificates and grade transcripts. In case you upload uncertified copies of these documents online, they will be accepted and your application will be considered for admission, but you will ne requested to bring certified copies with you to HHL when you start your studies.
When should I apply for a scholarship and what other financial options are there?
Applicants will be considered for financial assistance upon a formal application only. You can apply for scholarships after you have submitted your program application. Please keep in mind that the MBA program has an earlier deadline for those candidates who wish to be considered for scholarships and we encourage early applications in this case. Am I required to speak German?
Though students do not have to speak German during the studies at HHL, solid language knowledge is a major benefit when looking for an internship or a job in Germany and Europe.
HHL offers German language classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced speakers and also a German intensive language course in August, prior to the study begin.
Is the program accredited or ranked?
Yes, HHL's full-time MBA program is accredited both in Germany and internationally, by AACSB and ACQUIN accreditation agencies.
What is the atmosphere at HHL and in Leipzig like?
HHL is the most popular business school in Germany located in one of the most dynamic and vibrant cities in whole Europe. Leipzig is home to 40,000 students and offers a high-quality lifestyle with very moderate living costs compared to other university cities. With its many parks around the campus, open air sports facilities, surrounding lakes with beautiful beaches, as well as many jogging and biking paths, Leipzig is probably the “greenest” metropole that you could find. Also our campus is surrounded by the green banks of the river Weiße Elster, where you can relax after a long day of group work. In your free time, you can also choose to have a drink with your classmates in one of the many cafés, bars and restaurants close to the campus or in the city center, or you can enjoy a cultural event. Where will I be staying in Leipzig?
Leipzig offers plenty of reasonably priced housing options. Many HHL students choose to rent a private apartment or a shared flat during their stay in Leipzig. In general, the international students prefer to live in the student dorms which are located very close to the campus and to the student cafeteria. All student dorms in Leipzig are rented out by the Studentenwerk Leipzig (institution governed by public law for the support of college and university students; maintains cafeterias, dormitories, administers student loans etc.) and are available to HHL students as well.
What kind of networking opportunities will I have at HHL?
Networking is one of the key benefits of an MBA, hence at HHL we support you from the very beginning of your studies to develop your own lifelong professional network. Thanks to our close-knit alumni network, you will benefit from mentoring programs, company visits or alumni talks, which will all enable you to get insights about the career paths that will open for you once you have graduated from HHL. Moreover, company presentations and recruitment visits conducted by leading companies frequently take place on our campus, so you will have the chance to approach the company representatives on your own and ask for internship or job opportunities. Are there any special requirements for applicants from China?
Applicants with university degree from People´s Republic of China are required to go through the APS certification process to prove the authenticity of both degree and grades obtained. APS stands for Academic Certification Authority (Akademische Prüfstelle) and is a service institution established jointly by German Embassy in Beijing and German Academic Exchange Institution (DAAD). Furthermore, APS certificate is an indispensable part of visa application documents for applicants who obtain their accreditation from a university of People´s Republic of China. APS process takes approximately 6-8 weeks, therefore it is recommendable to start APS certification process as early as possible so as to manage the whole application process more easily. Please kindly note that APS certificates are effective for an unlimited period.
