Research

Research conducted aims at solving managerial problems faced by organizations with a focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology transfer. Current research focuses on different facets of hybrid value creation (i.e. the process of generating additional value by innovatively combining products and services) and open innovation (i.e. a paradigm that postulates the integration of external sources into the innovation process). In addition, there is a genuine interest in conducting research on the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship.

Researchers of the Junior Professorship actively participate in the international research community through publications in leading journals such as the International Journal of Innovation Management or Journal für Betriebswirtschaft (JfB). We are also actively involved in presentations and discussions at academic conferences and workshops e.g. the Academy of Management (AOM), the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM), and the European Academy of Management (EURAM).  In our research we also collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines to ensure that multiple perspectives are considered. The Junior Professorhip also offers master’s thesis supervision alongside current research projects. Thesis topics in the past have ranged from exploring new business opportunities in the online furniture market to investigating business model innovation in new firms.

Doctoral Research

James Downs, an external doctoral student, intends to provide an extensive analysis of the key and current challenges facing the modern biopharmaceutical industry. One such focus is on bringing products to market faster and less costly in terms of their business models.

Chris Comberg, a research associate, will explore business model innovation amongst a multitude of industries. Currently, Chris is analyzing how Software as a Service (SaaS) can be a driver for companies to innovate their business models.

Safeguard the Interest of Family Stores - The Role of Logistics and Technology in Retail Business Models

Inarguably, the efficiency in the modern retail businesses has been due to the result of robust logistical strategies to gain competitive advantages. Efficiency in logistics leads to improved product availability and variety which results in increase in sales and therefore profit and also build the brand and drives customer loyalty. In the realm of logistics based business model, the proposed project focuses on the same function in retail business models and how capabilities in logistics and supply chain management lead to a company’s competitive advantage. The study will be done keeping in mind the retail industry in India and other developing markets which are still dominated by small family-run neighborhood stores and what is it that needs to be done to make the retail industry more efficient and responsive in these markets.

The project is financially supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
