Research

Research conducted aims at solving managerial problems faced by organizations with a focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology transfer. Current research focuses on different facets of hybrid value creation (i.e. the process of generating additional value by innovatively combining products and services) and open innovation (i.e. a paradigm that postulates the integration of external sources into the innovation process). In addition, there is a genuine interest in conducting research on the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship.

Researchers of the Rolf Schömgens Professorship actively participate in the international research community through publications in leading journals such as the International Journal of Innovation Management or Journal für Betriebswirtschaft (JfB). We are also actively involved in presentations and discussions at academic conferences and workshops e.g. the Academy of Management (AOM), the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM), and the European Academy of Management (EURAM).  In our research we also collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines to ensure that multiple perspectives are considered. The Professorship also offers master’s thesis supervision alongside current research projects. Thesis topics in the past have ranged from exploring new business opportunities in the online furniture market to investigating business model innovation in new firms.

Doctoral Research

Susanne Pankov, a research associate, focuses on sustainability issues as well as ecosystems in the sharing economy. Currently, Susanne is analyzing how founders of sharing ventures are managing paradoxes deriving from the industry.

Mirjam Rössler, a research associate, explores the field of business model innovation from an incumbent as well as entrepreneurial perspective. Thereby, she examines the impact of managerial cognition on the design of novel business model configurations. Currently, she focuses her research on the context of corporate entrepreneurship initiatives.

James Downs, an external doctoral student, intends to provide an extensive analysis of the key and current challenges facing the modern biopharmaceutical industry. One such focus is on bringing products to market faster and less costly in terms of their business models.

Knowledge Transfer

The Rolf Schrömgens Professorship is actively involved with transfer of knowledge from within HHL to various external partners through consulting projects. Some projects that the Professorship has been involved with are:

Delta Vir: Development of a business plan for a biopharmaceutical startup that has developed a novel cancer vaccine treatment

Translational Centre for Regenerative Medicine (TRM Leipzig): Development of a business plan for a biopharmaceutical startup that has developed a revolutionary approach for treating progressive myopia

Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification (IOM): Strategy consulting for the founding of an “ultra precision surfaces” technology center

HiperScan: Consulting the three year old startup on how to replicate their growth within Germany to other European countries

German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ): Collaboration on the development of a strategic plan for the formation of a bioenergy innovation hub

Next Bike: Working on a comprehensive business plan for new upcoming service offerings

Melodicus: Development of a business plan for the online music learning startup

The Professorship also actively supports the activities of Accelerate, the HHL student initiative that aims to foster and promote entrepreneurship at HHL and in the surrounding community.
