Interview with Tobias Lienesch

What is the most inspiring learning experience abroad you have had until today?

I experienced so many great learning experiences that it is hard to tell which one was the most inspiring. The professors at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business are really, really good. They create a very interactive classroom setting that strongly encourages interactions. This really fosters the learning experience. However, if I had to name one specific experience, it would be a lecture with Nobel Prize winner Richard Thaler. It was very inspiring to get to know more about his research and to hear his opinion on today’s most urgent questions such as climate change.

What was the most impressive cultural experience?

Probably the most impressive cultural experience was my visit to a College Football game. I am a huge fan of football, but what really stand out was the atmosphere before and during the game. Two hours before the game, almost everyone gathered in front of the stadium to see the Marching Band, the Cheerleaders or to meet each other at the tailgate parties. That was really impressive!

How has your stay at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business helped you to expand your network?

My semester abroad really helped me to expand my network. It was great to get to know people with different backgrounds, which all added exciting perspectives to group works and assignments. In addition, we had a strong community among the incoming exchange students. It was great to get to know people from all around the world visiting the USA to attend classes at one of the leading business schools in the world. The semester at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business was really a great opportunity to expand my network.

How has HHL supported you during your time abroad?

HHL was very supportive throughout my whole journey. They not only helped me within the application or VISA process, but they also supported me in receiving scholarships to finance my term in Chicago. Also, it was great how they handled the uncertainty regarding COVID and provided opportunities during a pandemic.
