By awarding the degree of Dr. re. oec. h.c., HHL recognizes the Chancellor’s accomplishments in leadership. Her style of political statesmanship is not only appreciated worldwide but also represents some of the core ideas of the Leipzig Leadership Model which was developed at HHL and focuses on value-oriented and holistic leadership. Consequently, HHL would like to honor Dr. Merkel’s accomplishments regarding practical leadership and the discussion of economics associated with it.
Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel will become the 20th person to obtain an honorary doctorate in economics from HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management since the reunification of Germany. Other recipients of the title include the U.S. economist and internationally renowned strategy expert Prof. Michael Porter from Harvard Business School, German entrepreneur Prof. Dr. Michael Otto, management professor Joseph Maciariello Claremont as well as former Saxon Prime Minister Prof. Dr. jur. h.c. mult. Kurt Biedenkopf.
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management is a university-level private business school with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. It was established over 120 years ago on the initiative of people from the Leipzig trades and continues to follow in this tradition by training tomorrow’s entrepreneurially-minded and sustainably-oriented leaders and entrepreneurs. Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Founders’ Association of German Science) ranked HHL as the best entrepreneurial university in Germany for the fourth time in a row in 2018.
