The Virtual HHL Expert Talk series addresses latest and key topics in its research and academic programs to a broad audience. This also applies to the ongoing corona crisis and its effects. Governments are closing schools, imposing curfews and the German cabinet has assembled a multi-billion euros aid package to prop up the country’s economy  to protect jobs, businesses and retail. Join us on May 6, 2020 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm (CEST) for a live, virtual talk with Jun.-Prof. Dr. Erik Maier on how the global retail industry’s performance has taken a serious hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consumption and Retail in Times of Corona

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Erik Maier gives an insightful update on consumer behavior during the corona crisis, with a special focus on e-commerce. He will discuss key statistics on search behavior, evidence from various sources and aim to confirm or challenge common conceptions (e.g., “Grocery e-commerce and Netflix are the biggest winners.”). Based on early evidence of drivers of behavioral changes, he derives implications for consumption patterns when society returns to the “new normal”.

The HHL Expert Talk with Jun.-Prof. Dr. Erik Maier provides an answer to the following questions:

  • Is online grocery actually profiting as much as discussed in the media? What motivates a shift to online grocery?
  • What about e-commerce in general? Are certain product categories winning or losing?
  • Are streaming services the biggest winner of people staying at home?
  • Will consumption patterns shift to a „new normal“ or is this just an intermediate phase?
