New Record: Rate of International Students at HHL Reaching Nearly 60 %
Excellent reputation, internationality and a focus on practice convince applicants
A total of 117 students from 29 countries enrolled at HHL – Leipzig Graduate School of Management for the 2011/2012 winter term. Among them are 43 exchange students from HHL's international network now up to 107 partner universities. With nearly 60 percent the proportion of international students has reached a new record as of the new academic year.
The students consider various factors when choosing a university. 22-year-old Bangkok-born Piraya Suthimai was won over by HHL. After her completing a Bachelor program at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and a long-term internship at BMW in Munich, she will now study in the M.Sc. program in Management. Piraya Suthimai says: "I decided for HHL due to its flexible M.Sc. program. The opportunity to do two internships is very important to me. I think that the connection between theory and practice will prepare perfectly me for my entry into professional life. After graduating from HHL, I would like to work in Europe for a while."
30-year-old Sascha Meissner from Halle, Germany, who worked as a Senior Consultant at IBM prior to entering the MBA program says: "I chose HHL due to its worldwide reputation, extensive curriculum and internationalism. Another factor was the geographical location of this business school. My personal goal is to work in the Halle-Leipzig region after graduating from HHL."
Welcome Days Focusing on Corporate Responsibility
The enrollment ceremony for all new students has taken place today, September 13, 2011. Karl-Erivan W. Haub, CEO and general partner of the Tengelmann group, said: "The economy in our world needs leaders with charisma and talent. My advice to HHL students is: Find out what you excel at, refine your skills and talk about HHL in your circles." Professor Andreas Pinkwart, Dean of the school, said: "We would like to give the HHL students a warm welcome. You have made the right choice, studying at a university with a mission based on excellent teaching and top-level research. The international HHL community allows you to extend both your personal and professional network through a global perspective. You will experience a truly entrepreneurial spirit at HHL which has led to more than 120 start-ups by HHL alumni."
The new HHL students are getting to know their university and the city of Leipzig in a playful way this afternoon. The students will go on a scavenger hunt in teams made up of students from all programs. They have to head for the offices of the chairs and staff. There, they will find the answers to questions such as "Which German soccer club is Professor Zülch a fan of?" or "What was the function of the Old Stock Exchange in Leipzig when it was founded?" The winning team will be rewarded with a little surprise.
Tomorrow's second Welcome Day will deal with a topic of high relevance in society and the economy: responsible conduct. The students are to be taught the importance of sustainability and responsibility for everyday business and student life from the very first day at HHL. The Dr. Werner Jackstädt Chair of Economic and Business Ethics at HHL is in charge of the organization and content of this part of the welcome event.
Introductory presentations by employees of the event's sponsors, i.e. Henkel, Deutsche Bank and Bosch, will provide the students with insight into the challenges of implementing the Code of Responsible Conduct in Business. In the afternoon, concepts will be prepared; e.g. on how to communicate the implementation of the Code more effectively within and outside the company.
