Warsaw School of Economics wins The Negotiation Challenge (TNC) 2011
Winner of this year's negotiation world cup The Negotiation Challenge (TNC) was the team from the Warsaw School of Economics, closely followed by the team from the Iceland Reykjavik University.
The thrilling finale was held at Da Capo, a venue in Leipzig which hosts the largest collection of oldtimer cars in Central Germany. In the end, the winning Polish team was delighted to accept a trophy and the title of "World Champion in Negotiation". Team member Dariusz Babrzynski (23) said: "The world negotiation challenge in Leipzig was a great experience for us. While debating with teams from India, the U.S. or Germany we experienced very different approaches and negotiation styles. Big compliments to the organizing team from HHL! The venues and topics of the TNC were very well chosen. We were also very fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of the City of Leipzig."
In various rounds from March 11 - 12, 2011, the following 12 teamscompeted against each other: Aarhus Business School (Denmark), ALBA Graduate Business School (Greece), BI Norwegian School of Management (Norway), Bucerius Law School / WHU (Germany), HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management (Germany), IESEG School of Management (France), King's College (United Kingdom), Kyoto University (Japan), National Law School of India University (India), Reykjavik University (Iceland), University of Georgia School of Law (USA), and Warsaw School of Economics (Poland).
Dr. Remigiusz Smolinski, initiator and jury member of the TNC said regarding the event's fifth anniversary: "What has evolved over the years is the diversity of cases and the negotiation skills they callfor. In comparison to the starting days of this unique competition the international teams today have to show much more elaborate negotiation skills in order to excel. We are delighted about the high standing of the TNC. Today, we have far more applications from top business as well as law schools from around the world than we finally accept for the competition."
The TNC was organized by HHL MBA students. In four rounds, the teams had to negotiate topics strongly related to the different venues of the event. In the Sternburg brewery, for instance, the teams had to negotiate the purchase and sale of ingredients used to produce beer. Among other criteria, the jury evaluated how sustainable the strategies were and how convincingly they were presented.
Sponsors of the 2011 TNC were the German Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, CMS Hasche Sigle, HHL Alumni Association, and Maryme Ltd. Venues for the TNC were kindly provided by the Leipziger Brauhaus zu Reudnitz / Sternburg Brauerei, LVV - Leipziger Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH as well as HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management.
