Which Competencies in the Consulting Business Are in Demand?

"The daily project work in business consultancy is determined by independent problem solving, regular coordination within the team as well as open communication with customers," says Moritz Palme after his ten-week internship with Roland Berger. The focus of his work was a reorganization project, and the 27-year-old felt well prepared for it by HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management's Master in Management Program (M.Sc.). "HHL's M.Sc. courses teach you a large amount of tools that help you find well-structured solutions," the Bavarian-born student reports. "These are subsequently implemented in realistic tasks and the results are presented as part of group work. In addition, the multitude of diverse tasks helps for better planning and prioritization. All of these are important qualities in business consultancy." However, not only the study program itself help Moritz Palme to enter the consulting business. "Numerous presentations by management consultants on the HHL campus provide us students with the opportunity to obtain information on large diversified companies, or small specialized business consultancies and to establish contacts. Individual advice from recruiters on applications are also helpful."

Important: Internship with strategic conceptional orientation

Stefanie Galdia, HR Manager at Roland Berger, emphasizes the importance of personal meetings: "Use the opportunity at events during your studies to get to know your favored business consultancy! Personal contact offers a first glimpse into our work." Internships are also important. "In addition to excellent academic achievements, international experience through internships or terms abroad, graduates should also have gained practical experience by doing two or three internships with strategic conceptional orientation."

According to personnel managers at Roland Berger, HHL students are convincing on both a technical as well as a personal level. "Many of them have practical experience through previous internships. The often diverse academic backgrounds are complemented by a sophisticated HHL study program. We at Roland Berger are looking for special characters – and we find them at HHL," says Stefanie Galdia.
