Germany's "Marketing Pope" Turns 80
Like none other, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Heribert Meffert is considered to be a pioneer and trailblazer for modern-day marketing in Germany. His name is closely associated with the transformation from teaching trade and sales to marketing, just like the next one from marketing to market-oriented corporate leadership. In 1969, Prof. Meffert started his work at the University of Münster as the first professor in Germany to hold a chair in marketing. He went on to develop his discipline very successfully for almost fifty years, together with his numerous academic disciples and grandchildren. He founded Germany's first Institute of Marketing in Münster where he served as the Director for many years. Prof. Meffert was also a founding member of the Academic Society for Marketing and Business Leadership. "The idea behind this society – leading personalities from the Germany economy entering into a dialogue with Heribert Meffert – emphasizes that, as a researcher, he has always sought dialogue with practice," comments Prof. Dr. Manfred Kirchgeorg, who currently leads the society, which is based at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management.
Meffert's holistic approach as the foundation for the Leipzig Leadership Model
Heribert Meffert also greatly influenced the evolution of Handelshochschule Leipzig (HHL) following its re-establishment in 1992. In 1992, he initially joined the marketing commission for the re-establishment of Germany's first business school. Then in 1995, he was appointed the first Dean of the new business school while serving as the holder of the Chair of Marketing Management at the same time. Among Prof. Meffert's greatest enduring accomplishments are the development of the university concept and the recruitment of qualified professors. The key aspects of his concept, which influences the development of HHL and the Leipzig Leadership Model to this day, are a holistic approach to economic research and teaching ("integrated management"), a close connection between theory and practice, an international focus for the program and the systematic promotion of leadership behavior and social competence.
HHL Dean Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart says, "Heribert Meffert, one of the most outstanding representatives of marketing, is celebrating a very special birthday. More than anyone else, he has molded his discipline and aroused enthusiasm about market-oriented leadership among generations of students and junior researchers. With his exemplary commitment to HHL, he has played a leading role in the successful development of our school. The entire HHL Community wishes Heribert Meffert a happy birthday and sends him all the best. Ad multos annos!"
In July 2012, HHL appointed Prof. Meffert, along with Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Horst Albach, Honorary Professor of Business Administration at HHL. Through this, the first business school established in Germany acknowledged the scientists' commitment in the establishment of the HHL Center for Advanced Studies in Management (CASiM), among other things. It examines crucial questions of business administration in the 21st century.
In 1998, Prof. Meffert was awarded honorary membership in the HHL Alumni Association; in 1999, he received an honorary doctorate from HHL. For his life's work, the Senate of HHL named Heribert Meffert an Honorary Senator in 2016.
