Our research in family firms focuses on the following four questions:

  • How do family firms differ from non-family firms in terms of goals, strategies and governance?
  • How are the growth strategies and growth paths different in family firms?
  • What are the major growth drivers, and how can family firm specific growth hurdles be overcome?
  • How can family businesses succeed in the succession process?

because of the pressing importance that certain management challenges have for the success of family firms, this topic was institutionalized at the Chair of Strategic Management and Organization already in 2007.

Currently, research is being conducted in all outlined areas in the form of working papers, master theses and Ph.D. projects. Recent publications of the Chair have been invited for presentations at the leading conferences on strategy and family businesses like IFERA, FERC, BCERC, G-Forum.

The mid-term goal is to establish a Center for Family Business at HHL which will aim at doing internationally recognized research in this field.
