All forms on this page are in German. Our student counselors will assist you during the introduction sessions to fill them out correctly.
After finding accommodation, you must register within the first two weeks of your stay at one of the offices of the City Hall. Their >> offices are located in all parts of the city.
All students must present the following >> form together with the rental agreement for your apartment, and your passport (or for EU alternatively: Identity Card).
Foreigners coming from one of the EU countries (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), also need the following >> form plus:
City registration does not require any fees.
It is highly recommended to open a bank account in Germany for the duration of your stay. You may do it at a bank of your choice. Some institutes offer special conditions for students. The Foreigner's Office might ask you to open a blocked account for your stay in Germany (670 Euro per month). In this case you must open an account.
All foreigners, except citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway have to go to this office within 90 days of arriving in Germany. The office is located in Prager Str. 128, building B.I, from HHL you can take tram 15 to "Technisches Rathaus".

Usually you will receive a residence permit with duration maximum of two years that you must prolong in case your studies take longer.
The fees are as follows:
Each student must pay a social fee to the local student union. This fee has to be paid to HHL, and HHL is obliged to transfer the money to the student union. The fee is 99 Euro (starting with Spring 2012), and includes a free usage of Leipzig’s public transport system during 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. as well as on weekends.
In case you want to use public transportation for free also on daytime during the whole semester, you can buy a special semester ticket for additional 81,10 Euro directly at one of the LVB stores.
A waiver of the mandatory fee is possible only in cases where the student is absent from Leipzig for a period of at least six months. The student union will decide based on the >> written application (in German) of the individual student.
In case you have lived outside of Leipzig prior to your start at HHL, and you have chosen to take your main residence in Leipzig for the duration of your studies (registration as “Hauptwohnung”) the city of Leipzig will refund part of your mandatory social fee, and transfer 150 Euro on application.
Students eligible for application are M.Sc. students and some exchange students. These students must show that their attendance in the program at HHL is directly connected with their Bachelor’s degree (subject and timeframe).
Not eligible are Ph.D. and MBA students. Also not eligible are students who were registered in Leipzig before coming to HHL.
Application deadline is December 31; in addition you must be registered in Leipzig by December 31. You will need: >> application form, enrollment certificate, proof that your program at HHL is in direct timeline after completing your undergraduate degree.
